Clients I Work With

I primarily work with first responders and veterans (and their adult family members), because I am an EMT and retired law enforcement officer myself. I am passionate about helping first responders stay strong by building resilience, learning more emotional coping tools to get better outcomes at work and at home, and occasionally needing a safe environment to "off-load" some of the intrusive effects of traumatic incidents. I have first-hand experience with the cumulative nature of critical incidents, both everyday ones as well as large-scale traumatic incidents. This motivated me to go back to school to complete my master’s degree in counseling to be able to provide the clinical support which was not available to me during my law enforcement career.

Approach

I am passionate about helping first responders and veterans stay strong by helping to build resilience, learn better coping tools to get better outcomes at work and at home. I provide a safe environment to "off-load" some of the intrusive effects of traumatic incidents. I use various modalities including Solution-Focused Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Couples and Group Therapy, Faith-based Therapy, Performance Based Mindfulness Therapy (mPEAK), Positive Psychology, Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM), etc.

Beliefs & Lived Experience

If you are in Arizona, a first responder, veteran, or one of their partners, I would love to discuss how I can help support you in your healing journey so that you can learn new perspectives and skills to get better outcomes at work, home, and in your relationships.

More About My Practice

I offer Telehealth appointments only at this time. I know Telehealth can be feel a bit impersonal for some, especially for first responders and veterans. However, please know that research indicates efficacy is about the same for Teleheath sessions as in-person therapy. And many find having less of a commute works nicely with busy schedules. We accept Aetna, Craig Tiger Act, self-pay with out-of-network reimbursement. The practice webpage link is: http://www.drkuhlman.com/about.html
