Telehealth Availability:
I also offer telehealth in the following two circumstances: a) as a backup option for when a client is unable to make it to their appointment due to a last-minute barrier (icy roads, mild illness, childcare issues, etc.), or b) as the primary modality if the client is unable to attend due to barriers such as geographical distance, mobility issues, etc.
In-Person Availability:
I offer in-person sessions in a convenient and secluded office right on the Willamette River near Coburg Road. When appropriate, some clients choose to do their therapy sessions while walking on nearby hiking trails.
Clients I Work With
I work with adults of all ages, genders, and identities. Some identities that I especially focus on are people in multicultural/mixed race relationships or families, men (often seeking therapy for the first time), people who perform for a living (performing arts, athletes). I work with people on anxiety/OCD, relationship challenges, low self-worth, chronic illness burnout, sexual issues, childhood trauma, ADHD, spiritual issues, religious trauma, parenting, addiction, & men's issues.
Approach
The most common complaint I hear from people who've seen other therapists is that "All they did was listen!" That's not how I work. While deep listening is something I am committed to, I see therapy as an active collaboration.
I draw heavily from mindfulness and acceptance-based cognitive behavioral tools. This involves noticing the way that the mind and body, while trying to protect us and keep us safe, create much of our suffering through the stories the mind tells, physiological reactivity loops, and then behavioral cycles and habits. My work often features in-session experiential exercises to practice a more skillful relationship to the nervous system, whether the issue at hand is spiraling anxiety, or something more subtle like emotional withdrawal within an intimate relationship. Learning to accept and befriend the nervous system is fundamental to being able to breaking stuck cycles. It unlocks the ability to be our most courageous, creative, flexible selves, and to create new habits, relationships, and pursue a life focused on what matters.
Beliefs & Lived Experience
One core belief I have is that people always do what makes sense, given the sum total of their knowledge, experiences, beliefs, traumas, skills, etc. In other words, if I were in another person's shoes, I would behave exactly as they do. Although we may not have access to all the information that would be necessary to understand a person, you can bet that if we did, we would say something like, "Of course they are that way! How else could they possibly be?" The implications for therapy are:
Blame and shame have no place, and don't even make sense. Acceptance is the only sensible position.
To change an outcome, we have to make the preferred behavior make sense. We must change the context. It will get better when it can get better. We can't judge ourselves into positive change.
We can move us from a shame-based place of "What's wrong with me?" to a context-based "What happened to me?" and finally to an empowering stance of "What's possible?"
