Clients I Work With
I specialize in working with adults experiencing life transitions, aging-related concerns, chronic/life-limiting diagnoses and caregiver stress, as well as feelings of grief and loss, and anxiety and depression related to these or other circumstances. For all of us, change and challenge are inevitable parts of life, yet sometimes they may seem to prevent our happiness and satisfaction, instead causing us distress and self-doubt. I work with clients to develop strategies for personal crisis management, achievement of goal setting as well as work and life balance, and addressing communication concerns and desire for improved interpersonal connection in their relationships. Perfectionism, fear of failure and imposter syndrome and other patterns affecting self-worth can be additional areas of focus in our work.
Approach
I approach my work from a relational stance, believing that our strong, trusting therapeutic relationship is essential to you achieving your goals for therapy, greater personal understanding, and an improved sense of well-being. Our collaboration will involve not just talking, but my truly hearing and responding from a place of empathy and acceptance. As a psychodynamic therapist, I welcome reflection on beliefs and perceptions related to your life experiences, relationships, and attachments, how they shape who you know yourself to be. My priority is to provide an environment in which you feel free to share and consider your life story, thoughts, and feelings, and where you feel seen, known and valued, where you can feel encouraged and able to explore your perceptions and challenges, hopes and goals.
Beliefs & Lived Experience
As an older therapist, I have had wide-ranging experiences during my upbringing, young adult, and adult years. My age and lived history, lived wisdom as it were, are assets and strengths in my work. I am the middle child of three born to parents who were faith professionals. I completed schooling and achieved an advanced degree while in my fifties, then began a career as a therapist. I have had personal experience with loved ones with cancer, Parkinson’s Disease, and dementia, and who are differently abled, offering support as a caregiver throughout. I welcome you as an individual, not as a diagnosis or an issue, in the midst of and in spite of what's happening for and to you here and now, and how you feel affected. My lived history and experiences enable a sense of organic communication and connection that enriches our therapeutic work and relationship.
More About My Practice
We’ve all encountered books and stories where an unexpected plot twist, or several, caught us by surprise, changing what we were thinking and anticipating, causing us to re-evaluate and reimagine what’s ahead. Just when we believe we see what’s coming, we’re surprised and caught off guard. A lot like life. Sometimes the twists in our own stories are exciting, happy developments, and other times, we may be disappointed, stunned and sad, angry and confused, maybe thinking, “Wait a minute. This wasn’t supposed to happen. I didn’t choose and I don’t want this. What now?” One thing certain about plot twists, they always spark our feelings. The stories we’ve held dear about our relationships, our careers, our goals, our health and golden years, perhaps, are not unfolding towards happily-ever-afters after all. What now? I’ve been where you are. Let’s explore what’s next in your story, together.
