Clients I Work With

I try not to limit who I work with, but over time it has become clear I am particularly helpful for people who feel stuck in their patterns. That might be a habit of ruminating on the past or anxious worry about the future for example. Sometimes stuck patterns are interpersonal, like repeating the same arguments with a loved one or falling into what feels like the same relationship over and over again. Other times stuck patterns relates to work, school, or struggles with every-day tasks and chores. One more pattern I often work with is internal: habitually feeling the same distressing feeling. People in these situations have generally tried a lot and are confused about what's not working, frustrated or even hopeless about the prospect of change.

Approach

Therapy with me is both exploration and intentional practice. These two go hand in hand, though usually we do more curious exploration at first. We get to know your inner experience deeply, mainly just through talking. I'll ask questions with curiosity and over time it will become clear this is a non-judgmental space where we both get excited when we notice something we hadn't caught before. I strive to be a clear mirror and reflect what I'm seeing back to you honestly and compassionately. We build a detailed understanding over time, and that insight leads us to the practice part. We'll use our growing understanding to try out small specific changes, and just like any new skill, we'll practice and troubleshoot what we're trying out. Each new curiosity, each experiment, each exploration will move you along your own path, bringing you closer to living your values, and closer to a sense of internal stability.

Beliefs & Lived Experience

I started meditating when i was a teenager, and like most who do, it wasn't because everything felt fine in my life. I've struggled, and tried a lot of different perspectives. Along my path I've spent time at monasteries, participated in meditation retreats, done my own therapy, studied philosophy and religion and tried a number of ways of making a living. I've worked in labs, kitchens, and retail; labored on farms, taught, and led groups in remote wilderness settings. I've come to understand that if we want to have a good shot at changing a system for the better, we need to understand it, and understanding means trying to notice and discern how the internal parts relate to each other, without judgement. If we judge what we find immediately, it skews our view of it. So a big part of my job is to help do that noticing in a compassionate and sustainable way.

More About My Practice

I am a Contemplative therapist, which means my work involves a fair bit of mindfulness, and takes that skill further than just stress relief or grounding. I want to acknowledge that many people have not had a great experience with mindfulness practices and might be wary of them. That's fair and I want to be clear that while I have done work and training to address this common experience, I will not push or insist on any formal mindfulness practice while you work with me. If, on the other hand that is something you want to incorporate into our work, that is also welcome.
