CURRENT STATUS
State APRN authorization is required.
- APRN Compact is not operationalThere is currently no active APRN multistate-license pathway.
- NLC covers RN and LPN/VN licensesAn RN multistate license does not grant PMHNP practice authority.
- Prescribing requirements varyReview each state’s scope, agreements, and medication-specific rules.
COMPACT STATUS
Is there an active compact for PMHNPs?
The APRN Compact is intended to allow eligible advanced practice registered nurses to practice across member states with a multistate license. It is not an operational licensing route as of this update.
For current practice, NCSBN’s nursing compact FAQ directs APRNs to obtain individual APRN authorization in each state of advanced practice.
What state enactment means
Delaware, North Dakota, Utah, and South Dakota adopted the 2020 APRN Compact model. NCSBN’s enactment announcement explains the seven-state threshold for implementation.
An enacted law does not itself provide a usable multistate license. Check official APRN Compact updates for any future application process.
This guide is for general education and planning. Confirm current requirements with the relevant licensing boards and official compact sources before applying or providing care.
NURSING LICENSE TYPES
RN licensure and APRN authority
PMHNP practice involves advanced nursing qualifications in addition to RN licensure. Review both with the destination-state board.
| Requirement | What it covers | What a PMHNP should check |
|---|---|---|
| RN license or RN compact privilege | Registered nursing practice. The NLC also covers LPN/VN licenses. | Whether your underlying RN authorization meets the destination state’s requirements. |
| APRN license, recognition, or authorization | Advanced practice in an approved role and patient population. State terminology varies. | Whether you have the approval required to practice as a PMHNP in that state. |
| Prescribing authority | Authority to prescribe within the state’s scope and conditions. | Any separate application, agreement, registration, or medication-specific restriction. |
STATE APPLICATIONS
What to check when adding a state
Use the NCSBN nursing board directory to find current requirements. State boards determine the documents and approvals needed for your application.
RN authorization
Confirm whether the state accepts your RN multistate privilege or requires another RN licensing step. Keep the underlying RN authorization active.
PMHNP education and certification
Check the board’s requirements for your advanced practice role and psychiatric-mental health population focus. Arrange any requested education or certification verification.
APRN application and history
Review the endorsement or recognition process, fees, background checks, and license verification. Complete any required disclosures or state-specific coursework.
Renewals and continuing education
Track RN and APRN renewal dates, certification requirements, and required education topics. Include prescribing or controlled-substance credentials in your renewal schedule.
PRACTICE AUTHORITY
PMHNP prescribing and collaboration requirements
Check whether the destination state requires physician collaboration, supervision, delegation, or a written practice agreement. Review any separate prescriptive-authority application and the permitted scope of psychiatric medication management.
For controlled medications
Review state controlled-substance registration and federal DEA requirements, including any conditions for the planned telehealth encounter.
The prescriber overview’s controlled-medication section summarizes the current federal extension and links to official guidance.
ONLINE CARE
PMHNP telehealth across state lines
Check the rules where you are physically practicing and where your patient is physically located during the visit. An appointment from another state may require additional authorization even when you already know the patient.
Plan for continuity
- Confirm patient location at each appointment.
- Discuss moves, travel, and seasonal stays before follow-up visits are scheduled.
- Review consent, privacy, documentation, and emergency-planning requirements.
- Check liability coverage, payer arrangements, pharmacy access, and refill procedures.
NEXT STEPS
How to plan multi-state PMHNP practice
Start with one destination state and work through its nursing and prescribing requirements.
- Confirm the RN requirement.Ask the destination board whether your current RN license or multistate privilege satisfies the underlying RN requirement.
- Apply for advanced practice authorization.Use the board’s PMHNP/APRN pathway. Submit the requested role, population-focus, education, certification, and license-history information.
- Complete practice and prescribing approvals.Arrange any required collaboration or supervision, prescriptive authority, and state or federal controlled-substance registrations.
- Verify approvals and maintain them.Confirm that each required approval is active before beginning care. Track renewals and list only your current practice locations in public profiles.
FOR CLIENTS
Finding a PMHNP who can treat you across states
Tell the provider where you will attend visits and whether you regularly move or travel between states.
- Are you authorized to provide PMHNP care in each of my appointment locations?
- Can you prescribe the medication I need there?
- How should we plan follow-up visits and refills if I move or travel?
COMMON QUESTIONS
APRN Compact and PMHNP FAQs
Is the APRN Compact operational?
No. As of September 23, 2026, there is no operational APRN multistate-license pathway. PMHNPs should use the destination state’s current advanced practice licensing process.
Does an RN compact license cover PMHNP practice?
No. The Nurse Licensure Compact covers RN and LPN/VN licensure. PMHNPs need the separate APRN authorization and prescribing authority required by the state where they provide care.
Is a PMHNP an APRN?
A psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner is an advanced practice nurse with nurse practitioner preparation and psychiatric-mental health certification. State licensing terminology and requirements vary.
Do I need another RN license in every state?
The answer depends on your RN authorization and the destination state’s rules. An eligible RN multistate privilege may satisfy the RN requirement in an NLC state. It still does not replace that state’s APRN approval.
Does full practice authority in one state carry into another?
No. Follow the requirements of the state where you provide care, including any collaboration, supervision, prescribing, or controlled-substance rules.
Can I keep seeing my PMHNP after moving?
Ask before moving. Your PMHNP needs authorization to treat and prescribe for you in the new state. Discuss follow-up and refill arrangements before your location changes.
