Clients I Work With
I helps adults with chronic pain and illness navigate the physical and emotional challenges of their conditions so they can reclaim their lives. You’ve been living with chronic pain or illness for months or years. You’ve been to countless appointments, gotten multiple opinions, and tried what seems like every treatment there is, and you’re still struggling. You feel exhausted, frustrated, and isolated. You feel trapped by pain and symptoms, and you just want your life back. You want a different way forward. Your symptoms are real, and you don't have to figure out how to heal alone.
I provide specialized care for complex, poorly understood, and often "invisible" conditions, such as back pain, fibromyalgia, CRPS, migraines, dysautonomia, chronic fatigue, and many others. If you're looking for an experienced, compassionate psychologist and a different approach, we may be a good fit. I'll focus on helping you build a life that feels full and meaningful—not one defined by pain or illness.
Approach
I focus on techniques that are evidence-based (grounded in well-established research and science). My works centers around providing education about the neuroscience behind pain and other persistent symptoms; pain reprocessing therapy (PRT); cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT); emotional and stress-related contributors to chronic symptoms; addressing fear-avoidance cycles; nervous system learning and re-training; emotional processing; and mind-body approaches. Each patient/situation is different. I may incorporate acceptance approaches, trauma work, and other modalities as needed. I will start with a careful, thorough assessment to understand your symptoms. We will work to define what may be possible and realistic for you, set goals and expectations accordingly, and actively work toward them. For some people, this may look like resuming more intensive activities like weight lifting or tennis; for others, this may mean being able to walk around a store, clean the house, or go for a drive with less pain or fatigue.
Beliefs & Lived Experience
Working with a psychologist does not mean your pain is “all in your head” or imagined. Your pain is in fact very real, and it is important that you feel believed, heard, and understood. Physical pain and psychological processes influence one another in complex ways, and therapy can help you work with that connection without dismissing the reality of your symptoms.
My work is informed by many years of experience providing specialized psychological care in medical settings as well as my own personal experience with chronic symptoms, going through the medical system, and eventually finding meaningful improvement through mind-body approaches.
My style is professional but also warm, friendly, and down-to-earth. I have a good sense of humor and am organized and prepared. I balance supporting you and being on your side with compassionately challenging you when needed. I will often ask you to practice skills in between sessions. I believe that good therapy should feel a little challenging at times.
More About My Practice
I am flexible in my approach depending on your goals. I take time to get to know you and carefully select treatments that are the right fit for you. Our work may involve helping you better understand the complex connections between your body, nervous system, emotions, thoughts, behavior, and symptoms; change your relationship to pain; reduce fear and avoidance; build practical skills to manage pain and physical limitations; navigate unpredictability of flare-ups; address grief and loss of identity; expand what feels possible and look for opportunities for improvement; rebuild meaningful activities; adapt to changes in your health; and reduce frustration and other strong emotions. I work best with those who come in with an open mind, like trying new things, expect that change takes time, and are prepared to actively participate in therapy, recognizing that it takes committed action to improve and heal.
I offer individual, virtual therapy for adults. Out-of-network with insurance; superbills provided.
