YOUR LOCATION DURING SESSIONS

Can you attend online therapy from another state?

It is possible if your therapist is licensed or otherwise permitted to provide care in the state where you are during the appointment. Tell your therapist where you’ll be before you travel or move.

A temporary stay can change your session location even when your home address stays the same. If care cannot continue in that state, ask about rescheduling, a planned pause, or a referral.

Some providers can offer care through a compact privilege, telehealth registration, or another state pathway. Learn how therapy across state lines works.

If you expect to attend sessions in all three places, search all three states together. Include a travel stop only if you plan to have appointments there.

FIND CARE

How to find a therapist for travel or a move

Search your session states together to find providers whose listed licensure includes all of them.

Need care in one state only? Browse therapists by state.

  1. List the states where you’ll have sessions.

Include your current state, destination, and any temporary locations where appointments may happen. If you only need care after moving, start with your destination state.

  2. Choose the type of care you need.

Open the multi-state search and choose a service, such as Individual Therapy or Medication Management.

  3. Select your states together.

Choose two or more session states, then select “Find providers.” Results include providers whose listed licensure covers every selected state.

  4. Compare experience and practical fit.

Review specialties, therapy approaches, availability, and insurance or self-pay options. Look for someone who fits your care needs as well as your locations.

  5. Discuss your plans before booking.

Ask whether the provider can work with you in each location and how to handle future changes. Use the license verification guide to check their license status.

WHEN YOUR LOCATION CHANGES

Moving, work trips, and temporary stays

Moving to a new state

If you are relocating, ask whether your current therapist can continue care after the move or help you transition to someone licensed in your new state.

Traveling for work or family

Work trips, caregiving visits, family stays, and temporary housing can all change where you attend online therapy sessions.

Working remotely from another state

If you spend weeks or months working from another state, tell your therapist where you’ll be before your appointment. Include recurring work locations when you search for care.

Staying in temporary housing

A hotel, short-term rental, or family home may be your session location during a move or other transition. Share the state and expected dates with your therapist.

BEFORE YOU BOOK

Questions to ask before traveling or moving

Share your likely locations and dates. These questions can help you plan for appointments and any changes in care.

  • Can you work with me if I travel or move to another state?
  • Which states are you licensed or authorized to provide online therapy in?
  • What should I do if I attend a session from a temporary location?
  • How much notice do you need before my location changes?
  • If you cannot see me in my new state, can you help me plan a referral or transition?
  • If I need medication management, how will travel or moving affect prescriptions and pharmacies?
  • What information do you need from me if I am away from my usual home address?

PLAN YOUR SESSIONS

Privacy, scheduling, and payment away from home

A private space and connection

Choose a quiet place where others cannot overhear. Use your own device and a private internet connection. Check the video setup before the appointment and agree on what to do if the connection drops.

Time zones and travel days

Confirm the appointment time in your destination’s time zone. Leave enough time to settle in before the session, and ask about rescheduling if travel plans change.

Fees and insurance

Ask the practice and your insurer whether your coverage or expected costs will change when you attend from another state. A provider’s state license and your insurance coverage are separate questions.

Searching Therapy Expanded is free. Session fees vary by provider.

Prescriptions and pharmacy access

If medication is part of your care, contact your prescriber before you leave. Ask how the trip or move will affect appointments, refills, and the pharmacy you can use.

CONTINUING OR STARTING CARE

Plan your next step with a therapist

Already have a therapist?

If you already have a therapist you trust, ask about location before you travel or move. Your therapist may be able to continue care, may need to pause sessions while you are in another state, or may help you find a provider who is licensed where you will be.

This can feel frustrating, especially during a move or stressful transition. Planning ahead gives you more time to talk through options instead of trying to solve it right before a session.

Starting therapy for the first time?

If you are starting fresh, think about your next few months instead of only your current address. A therapist who is a good fit clinically and licensed in the places where you may attend sessions can make therapy easier to continue through travel, relocation, or life changes.

Start with your most likely session locations, then narrow by specialty, therapy approach, insurance or self-pay options, schedule, and personal fit.

BROWSE BY LOCATION

Explore therapists in your current or next state

State pages show providers who list a license there. To find one provider whose listed licensure covers several locations, use the multi-state search.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Online therapy while traveling or moving

Can I keep seeing my therapist if I move to another state?

You may be able to continue if your therapist is licensed or otherwise permitted to provide care in your new state. If not, they may need to pause sessions, refer you to someone else, or help you plan a transition before you move.

If you know a move is coming, it may help to search for a therapist licensed in multiple states.

Can I attend online therapy while traveling?

It may be possible if your therapist is licensed or otherwise permitted to provide care in the state where you are during the session. If you will be traveling, tell your therapist where you will be before the appointment.

For more background, read our guide to online therapy across state lines.

Do I need to tell my therapist every time I am in a different state?

Yes, it is a good idea to tell your therapist whenever your session location changes. Your provider may need to know where you are physically located before the appointment can begin.

If you travel often, ask your therapist what location information they need and how much notice they prefer.

What if I am only staying in another state temporarily?

Even a temporary stay can matter if you are physically located in that state during the appointment. Short-term rentals, hotels, family homes, work travel, and extended visits can all affect where the session is considered to be happening.

You can browse providers by state if you need to compare options in more than one location. If you regularly split the year between two homes, read our guide to online therapy for seasonal residents.

What should I ask a therapist before moving?

Before you move, ask whether the therapist can continue working with you in your new state, whether they need updated location or emergency contact information, and what the transition plan will be if they cannot keep seeing you.

You can also ask for their full name, license type, license number, and licensed states, then use the license verification page if you want to confirm their license status.

Can online therapy work if I work remotely from different states?

It can, but location planning becomes more important. If you work remotely from different states during the year, ask whether the provider can see you in each place where you may attend sessions.

If your location changes often, start with our guide to online therapy across state lines or search for providers who list licenses in multiple states.

What if I need medication management while traveling or moving?

Medication management can involve extra rules around licensure, prescribing, pharmacies, and controlled substances. If medication is part of your care, ask the provider whether they can support you in your current state, destination state, or travel location before you schedule.

You can browse online medication management providers, then confirm whether the provider can see you in each state where you may attend appointments.

How do I verify a therapist’s license before I move or travel?

Ask the provider for their full name, license type, license number, and the states where they are licensed. You can then use official state licensing board lookup tools to check the provider’s status.

For step-by-step guidance, visit how to verify a therapist’s license. You can also use the official license verification resources included on each state therapy page.

How should I search Therapy Expanded if I am moving or traveling?

Open the multi-state search, choose your type of care, and select every state where you expect to attend appointments. Results include providers whose listed licensure covers all selected states. Compare their specialties, approach, availability, and payment options.

If you only need care after arriving in one new state, you can browse therapists in that state. Before booking, share your plans and ask whether the provider can work with you in each session location.
